German International School Cape Town

Maintaining their reputation as a learning institution of excellence offering an international education, the German International School Cape Town is currently undergoing an R18 million upgrade to their facilities with the view of opening their doors to more non-German speaking learners who could benefit from the school’s world class academic offerings.

The upgrade, partly funded by the German Government, encompasses the construction of a striking architectural four storey masterpiece building consisting of a state-of-the-art two-level library, eight new classrooms and a multi-function room. “We consistently strive to offer the best international education and with our new building we can accommodate more learners in the non-German speaking stream. We welcome all interested learners from the broader Cape Town community,” says Hermann Battenberg, Principal of the school.

The fact that South Africans are embracing an energy-efficient and planet-conscious lifestyle has been highlighted by the more than 570 entries received from both professional and amateur designers for the 2012 Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition.

With the introduction of the competition to secondary schools for the first time this year, through and extensive lobbying programme,  Eskom has seen an increase in the number of entries from all corners of South Africa before the cut-off on Friday, August 31.  Winners will share the R214 000 prize money on offer and also honoured with the prestigious Sparks Trophy.

Highlighting opportunities for energy efficient lamps and technologies in the residential market, the biennial competition has helped stimulate wider-spread acceptance of green lighting designs and systems, making it an important part of Eskom’s ongoing programmes to instill a culture of energy and resource consciousness among South Africans.

Wildside Research: Elephant & Predator Monitoring Project

Conservation in Action with On African Soil

On African Soil took part in another amazing event and worked side by side with a highly qualified management and conservation team who successfully fitted a satellite tracking collar on a female elephant. This operation contributes to a research project on elephant movements within the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (GMTFCA).

Spotted  from the helicopter was a herd of 54 Elephants and the targeted female Elephant and her +/- 10year old calf as a result of skilful flying were separated from the rest of the herd.
